DJ Woman as a Phallic Symbol

(A/V performance at HUB 16) Ruth Angel Edwards received a BA in Fine Art from Central Saint Martins in London (UK) and currently lives and works in London. Music, the body, sex, and politics are themes that she mixes and mashes in order to create images and videos that are tense and complicating. The female body (and how it is packaged in culture) is examined through repetitions that reveal the queasiness of it all. And yet her works are far from being a hit-you-over-your-head investigation; they seek to seduce rather than convince. To approach the sexualized gaze is a difficult task, yet Edwards accomplishes it with raw intellect and uncompromising vision. Her work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally at institutions including Tate Modern, London; Human Resources, LA; Royal Standard, Liverpool; Arcadia Missa, London; Auto Italia South East, London; MEYOHAS Gallery, New York, and the Plymouth Arts Centre.
