The brilliant Chilean guitarist Cristián Alvear plays Catherine Lamb’s ‘Point/Wave’ for guitar and electronics. Plus a solo set from sculptor/sound artist/performer Rie Nakajima. And the world premiere of a duo piece specially written for Cristián and Rie by Sarah Hughes – ‘Kissing Repeat’.
The concert is a launch event for the release of Catherine Lamb’s ‘Point/Wave’ on a CD on the Another Timbre label.
Cristián Alvear lives in Santiago, where he spent nine years studying guitar at a music conservatory. An immensely talented instrumentalist, he has developed special techniques for playing quiet music with as little instrument noise as possible, and has released CDs by composers such as Sarah Hennies, Jürg Frey, Taku Sugimoto, Antoine Beuger, Ryoko Akama, Santiago Astaburuaga, Radu Malfatti, d’incise and JS Bach.

Rie Nakajima is a a sculptor living in London. She has been working on creating installations and performances by responding to physical characters of spaces using combination of motorised devices and found objects. Fusing sculpture and sound, her artistic practice is open to chance and the influence of others. She has exhibited and performed worldwide. She has collaborated with Ikon Gallery(Birmingham), Museo Vostell Malpartida (Cáceres), Tate Modern (London), Serralves Museum (Porto), ShugoArts (Tokyo), Hara Museum (Tokyo) and many others. Her frequent collaborators includes David Cunningham, Keiko Yamamoto, Pierre Berthet, David Toop, Haruko Nakajima and Akira Sakata.

Catherine Lamb (b. 1982, Olympia, Wa, U.S.), is a composer exploring the interaction of elemental tonal material and the variations in presence between shades and beings in a room. She has been studying and composing music since a young age. In 2003 she turned away from the conservatory in an attempt to understand the structures and intonations within Hindustani Classical Music, later finding Mani Kaul in 2006 who was directly connected to Zia Mohiuddin Dagar and whose philosophical approach to sound became important to her. She studied (experimental) composition at the California Institute of the Arts (2004-2006) under James Tenney and Michael Pisaro, who were both integral influences. It was there also that she began her work into the area of Just Intonation, which became a clear way to investigate the interaction of tones and ever-fluctuating shades, where these interactions in and of them-selves became structural elements in her work. Since then she has written various ensemble pieces (at times with liminal electronic portions) and continues to go further into elemental territories, through various kinds of research, collaboration, and practice (herself as a violist). She received her MFA from the Milton Avery School of Fine Arts at Bard College in 2012 and is currently residing in Berlin, Germany.
Sarah Hughes is an artist, composer and performer, producing work that explores the boundaries of interdisciplinary practice, often moving between sculpture, installation, composition and music. Her work has been exhibited and performed internationally, including at South London Gallery, Cass Sculpture Foundation, Supplement, London; and V22. As a performer Hughes has played at various venues including the Musée des Beaux Arts de Nantes; The Wulf, Los Angeles; Cafe Oto, London; Parasol Unit, London; Holywell Music Hall, Oxford, and with a number of musicians including Angharad Davies, Tim Parkinson, Jürg Frey, Michael Pisaro, Antoine Beuger, Patrick Farmer, Stephen Cornford, Ryoko Akama, David Stent, and Dominic Lash. Realisations of her compositions have been published by Another Timbre Records, Suppedaneum, Consumer Waste Records and Reductive Music.
