Japanese composer, guitarist, singer, and revered noise artist, Kazuyuki Kishino – aka KK Null – makes a welcome return to OTO for the first time in four years. Joining him on the bill is the great Hungarian drummer Balazs Pandi, who's performed and recorded with the likes of Merzbow, Mats Gustafsson, and Thurston Moore.
Kazuyuki Kishino, known by his stage name KK Null, is a Japanese experimental multi-instrumentalist active since the early 1980s. He began as a guitarist, but soon added composer, singer, electronic musician and drummer to his list of talents, and also studied Butoh dance at Min Tanaka's workshop.
KK Null joined the noise/progressive rock band YBO2 in 1984, issuing several albums and EPs throughout the remainder of the decade. Later he founded more bands, such as Absolut Null Punkt (aka ANP) and his most well known one, the self-described "progressive hardcore trio" Zeni Geva. From that point he also produced albums for other artists, created his own record label (Nux Organization), played live and collaborated on albums with many other musicians, including John Zorn, Yona-Kit, Steve Albini, Boredoms, Seiichi Yamamoto, Jim O'Rourke, Merzbow, Fred Frith, James Plotkin, Keiji Haino, Otomo Yoshihide, Jon Rose, Damian Catera, Atau Tanaka, Zbigniew Karkowski, Z'EV, Alexei Borisov, Earth, Cris X. Noisegate and Philip Samartzis, as well as supporting such artists as Sonic Youth and Mike Patton on tour. Altogether KK Null has released more than 100 albums. In 2004 he restarted ANP and in 2006 they released their first studio album in 20 years.
Balázs Pándi is a Hungarian drummer. He has worked and toured with various acts from all around the world including Venetian Snares, Otto von Schirach, Last Step, To Live and Shave in L.A., The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and Zu. He also played drums for the Blood of Heroes project.
Since 2009 he has frequently played drums live with Merzbow, and they have released three live records together. They headlined the experimental stage at the Scion Rock Fest in Tampa, Florida in 2012. More recently, he and Merzbow have performed as a trio with Mats Gustafsson. They released Cuts in 2013 on RareNoise. For the follow-up Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper (2015), they were joined by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.
Balázs started a electronica-metal-breakcore project with Bong-Ra called Wormskull in 2010 (their first album "Sound of Hell" was released in 2011). Most recently he joined the Italian experimental instrumental band Zu. His current projects include Italian doom band Obake, Metallic Taste of Blood (featuring Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree, Eraldo Bernocchi of Obake and Jamie Saft, and Slobber Pup (Saft, Joe Morris and Trevor Dunn). From 2012 he started to play solo shows on selected festivals under his own name.
Strange, intense and extreme lll人 is the trio of Daichi Yoshikawa, Paul Abbott and Seymour Wright. Together they have developed extraordinary sounds, and a complex, significant body of work since 2012.
lll人 has no obvious comparisons. The tools are familiar, but the listening is not. lll人 processes are complex, spikey, but open growths of future sound, testing extremes and perfectly reasonable.
