Osaka-based experimental guitarist Shinji Masuko – founder member of Japanese psych band DMBQ and guitarist/luthier for the Boredoms – brings his Moan project to OTO.
Shinji’s creative contributions in the Boredoms extends far beyond the guitar, including the design and production of their notorious seven-necked guitars (Sevena I & II), as well as track production and systems design for the Boredoms large scale BOADRUM projects. Moan originally grew out of this when Oneida drummer Kid Millions heard some Boredoms backing tracks on Shinji’s iPod while staying at his house during Boadrum rehearsals.
Support comes from John Chantler, whose excellent new album, Still Light, Outside – recorded using the organ at St John-at-Hackney, is curently available to stream and pre-order through bandcamp.
Shinji Masuko is the founder and the guitarist/vocalist for DMBQ, one of the leading psychedelic rock bands in Japan, and a member of the world-renowned experimental music group Boredoms. His creative contributions to the Boredoms extends beyond the guitar, including the design and production of two seven-necked guitars – Sevena I & II, track production and systems design. He is also the composer and organizer for The Floating Guitar Borchestra, a guitar orchestration unit consisting of up to 16 members who accompany the Boredoms live.
In April 2011, Woven Music – Masuko’s debut solo LP – was released by Jagjaguwar/Brah. The album was praised by publications including Pitchfork, The Phoenix, NYCTaper, and The New York Times for its unique soundscape of densely knit drones consisting of multilayered stringed instruments.
John Chantler is a musician and organiser living in Stockholm, Sweden. He mostly works with synthesizers and electronics to create unpredictable, highly dynamic music where passages of spare, alien beauty bridge distorted washes of masses harmonics.
Originally from Australia he spent a decade in London before moving to Sweden where he directs a small annual festival for 'other music' in Stockholm called Edition. The 'Fifth Edition' is provisionally scheduled for early August 2020.
Chantler has performed in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, North America and across Europe including appearances at Akousma, Montreal; Madeira Dig; +90db Festival, Rome; Issue Project Room, NYC; and London’s Southbank Centre.
His work has been commissioned by Borealis Festival for Experimental Music in Bergen, Norway; Organ for the Senses, San Diego, USA; ElbPhilharmonie, Hamburg, Germany and Tectonics, Glasgow, UK. Chantler has also been artist-in-residence at the ZKM centre for media arts in Karlsruhe, Germany and NOTAM in Oslo, Norway.
YPY is a solo project by an Osaka-based musician Koshiro Hino who also plays a central role in the bands Goat and Bonanzas. The compositions he produce for the bands are marked by the frequent use of muted sounds and overtones, while actively employing the sounds that are not part of the standard chromatic scale. Its primitive feel gets often referred to the current techno scene and was credited for achieving a new original style by elaborately synthesizing experimental and dance music. Two of Goat’s albums have been released until today from the prominent experimental label HEADZ in Japan, and numerous works have been produced alongside under the moniker of YPY from his own cassette label birdFriend. His wide-ranging solo works consist a pinch of humor added on top of the musical style he has established in the bands. Today, he is acclaimed as one of the prime emerging talents in Japan, and has been appointed to support the acts of artists as Arto Lindsay, Shackleton, Cut Hands, SURGEON, and D/P/I.
