As part of the three-day Art Ensemble of Chicago residency at Cafe OTO, we're thrilled to host a Q&A with members Roscoe Mitchell and Don Moye, hosted by journalist and broadcaster, Kevin le Gendre.
Now into their fifth decade, the Art Ensemble of Chicago has lost none of the verve or boldness of invention that has characterised them from the start; the impact and influence that they have had cannot be overstated and they remain an utterly essential live experience. At turns soulful, chaotic, energising and transcendant – playful yet attentive, generous but untethered – the AEC helped redefine what jazz music could be and continue to seek out its future. We're thrilled to have them back.

Kevin Le Gendre is a journalist and broadcaster with an interest in black music, literature and culture. Since the late 90s he has written about soul, jazz, African and Caribbean musicians and authors for a wide variety of publications that includes Echoes, Jazzwise, The Independent, The Guardian and Vibrations [Switzerland]. He has also contributed to and presented programmes for BBC Radio 3 and 4 such as Jazz Line Up and Front Row. In 2013 his first book Soul Unsung: Reflections On The Band In Black Popular Music was published to critical acclaim by Equinox.
