These linked events mark the launch of a new 50th anniversary edition of Pauline Oliveros’s Sonic Meditations, including specially-commissioned contributions from several practitioners of Deep Listening – Oliveros’s signature practice – and other writers.
First published between 1970 and 1974, the Sonic Meditations are a landmark in post-experimental music. They not only break with conventions separating composer, performer, and audience, but also reach towards developing musical forms of consciousness in which harmony is removed from the habits of music theory towards considerations of balance, healing, understanding, and social relations.

Artur Vidal is a London based and Spanish-born saxophone player who grew up in Paris where he studied music, philosophy and history of art. His work involves field recordings, sound walks, dance and improvisation. He has been doing academic research on improvised music and environmental sounds and has become a certified teacher of Pauline Oliveros’s Deep Listening practice. He has published two collections of text scores: The Hum in the Valley (2021) and Friendly Algorithms (2018).
IONE is a noted author, playwright/director and poet whose works include the critically acclaimed memoir, Pride of Family Four Generations of American Women of Color, Listening in Dreams and This is a Dream! She is the playwright and director of four stageworks developed with her spouse, Pauline Oliveros, including their final collaborative work, The Nubian Word for Flowers. Ione is the Founding Director of the Ministry of Maåt, Inc ( MoM, Inc) and Former Artistic Director of Deep Listening Institute, Ltd. Her most recent opera, TOUCH, with composer Karen Power, premiered at Irish National Opera in 2021.

Paul Stapleton is an improviser and sound artist originally from Southern California. He designs and performs with a variety of modular metallic sound sculptures, custom made electronics and found objects. Paul is currently Professor of Music at SARC in Belfast and director of Sonorities Festival. He has received critical acclaim for several artistic projects, including his album FAUNA with saxophonist Simon Rose, and for his sound design and composition for the immersive audio theatre piece Reassembled, Slightly Askew.

Ximena Alarcón is a sound artist-researcher interested in listening and sounding our sonic migrations: the resonances left in-between our geographical migrations. She is a Deep Listening® certified tutor, with a PhD in Music Technology and Innovation. Throughout her career, she has created telematic sonic improvisations and interfaces for relational listening, exploring sense of place and telepresence. She teaches Deep Listening® at the Center for Deep Listening, Rensselaer, Troy, NY, and independently, with an emphasis on Sonic Migrations.

Gloria Damijan – Extended Toy Piano(s), Berimbau, Percussion, Objects, and Visual Art
Gloria studied piano and music pedagogy at Music University Vienna with a focus on contemporary music and free improvisation. She performs across Europe both independently and as a member of the Viennese Improvisers-Network snim, and in telematic and network-based events with Dilate Ensemble and NowNetArts Hub Ensemble.

Jane Wang is a composer/multi-instrumentalist, instrument builder and multimedia artist. She has composed scores for dance and theater primarily with each of her long-time collaborators, performance artist Hanne Tierney and choreographer Nathan Andary. Viv Corringham is a US-based British vocalist and sound artist, described as “a vital force in improvised music since the late 1970s” (Corey Mwamba, BBC Radio 3). She has worked with many musicians including Pauline Oliveros, Charles Hayward, Mike Cooper, Elliott Sharp, and Maggie Nicols. She has done concerts and sound work in twenty-six countries in venues such as Hong Kong Arts Centre, Fonoteca Nacional de Mexico, Issue Project Room New York, and Institute of Contemporary Art London. “From cool Brion Gysin–esque wordplay to looped and multilayered operatic wails” (The Wire).

Mike spends his time helping his wife Marcie restore 500 acres of Driftless Area habitat in Wisconsin (Prairie Haven). During the Covid times he has been integrating various network and systems technologies to help musicians rehearse, perform and produce over the Internet.
