Enigmatic Japanese sound artist Tetsuya Umeda returns to London for a further exploration of rewired electricity, unpredictable sound and atmospheric transformation, following three incredible performances in 2013 in conjunction with the South London Gallery.
Also on the bill are Tim Shaw and Sébastien Piquemal, who explore mobile technology as a medium for sound diffusion. Audience members can join in by simply connecting to a specific website with their mobile phone, laptop or tablet. The connected devices become an array of speakers that the performers can control live, resulting in an omni-directional sonic experience.
Umeda gets ideas for his works from the environment and the circumstances surrounding the exhibition space. Even spaces that at first glance seem to be nothing special, can turn out to have countless characteristics, found in the space above the ceiling or the space behind the wall - or in the position of lighting system and its structure, the material of the wall, and construction of the building, etc. It is from such dialogue with a specific space that UMEDA creates his work. He often work in spaces not normally used for exhibition and make use of found objects like daily tools and waste scraps in elaborate systems of cause-and-effect relationships. Powered by gravity, wind, centrifugal force or falling objects UMEDA’s work keeps the situation unstable and unpredictable.

Tim Shaw is an artist working with sound, light and communication media. Presenting work through performances, installations and sound walks Tim is interested in how listening environments can be constructed or explored using a diverse range of techniques and technologies. He works with field recordings, electronics, video, modular synthesis, sound objects, self-made hardware and DIY software. His artworks, recordings and writings have been featured in The Guardian, Arte Tracks, Neural, BBC Radio 3, We Make Money Not Art, The British Music Collection, The Field Recording Show, Alphr, Its Nice That, SHAPE and The Space.

Sébastien Piquemal is a computer engineer, obsessively exploring the artistic capabilities of machines. After working several years as a full-stack web developer in Helsinki, Finland, he decided to dedicate himself fully to making music. Since then, he has been an active contributor to the open-source software community, leading various projects such as WebPd (Pure Data patches running in the web browser). As a lover of Jazz and improvised music, Sébastien is seeking new ways to place human interaction at the core of live music. He is presently doing a MA degree in sound in new media at Media Lab Helsinki.
